Introduction to Personal Knowledge Base

Why PKB ?

Have you ever thought “I wish I could remember who that plumber was?” or “Who was the project leader of that project?” or “What are all the reference documents for this topic?” and so on.

Many of us start with a card index, even in this computerised age. Often we keep a list of contacts on a mobile phone or in our email system.

However none of these help with anything more than the simplest things we have forgotten or can't find.

PKB changes all that.

What is PKB ?

PKB is a service that enables you to easily maintain a wide variety of information about people, organisations, committees, projects, documents and files both on the web and on local computers.

In particular, you can classify information by topic, build networks of topics to index and cross-reference your knowledge and link topics to all the other kinds of information you hold.

PKB goes well beyond and is therefore radically different from an Outlook contacts list or similar contact management systems.

If you wish, you can build up quite a detailed picture of what you or other people or organisations are involved in. You can record projects, meetings and activities. You can record the organisational units within each organisation. Posts in organisations, organisational units, committees or projects can be recorded.

All of this information can be cross-referenced and in particular, related to specific topics.

URLs can easily be associated with other information.

Thus you can easily record and, much more important, find just that piece of information you knew you had “somewhere”.

No more notebooks to trawl through – no missing “little black book” – all your knowledge is one place ! It is accessible whenever you have Internet access.

How is PKB delivered to you ?

PKB is a service delivered over the Internet. You can download the app or you can connect to the browser version of PKB by using your normal web browser and log in from the button on this page.

Aspects such as data backup and software upgrades are all handled automatically as part of the service.

Pricing

Friends of David Gradwell can use the service free of charge.
